Maui News 2018 primary endorsements II

The Maui News

(Note: As with all editorials, the following endorsements represent the personal opinion of the publisher of The Maui News. Endorsement of a candidate does not mean disparagement of others running for that office. There are many races where no preference will be expressed. As with all editorials, opinions in this space have no effect on news coverage by the paper. )

The primary election is Saturday, Aug. 11. In the state races discussed below, the top vote getter in each party will advance to the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

A good team

As we have noted in past elections, West Maui has a good team in the Legislature with Sen. Roz Baker (Senate District 6, West and South Maui) and Rep. Angus McKelvey (House District 10, West Maui, Maalaea, north Kihei). They not only work well collaboratively, but they also do an excellent job keeping their constituents informed about what is happening in the Legislature. These two deserve your vote.

Sen. Baker, of course, also represents South Maui. There we think she may be able to find a partner like McKelvey in former County Council Member Don Couch. Couch is running for the House District 11 (Kihei, Wailea, Makena) seat being vacated by Kaniella Ing.

Sen. Baker's long push for a high school for South Maui may be finally coming to fruition. It will be a fitting testament to a lot of persistent, hard work.

Others deserving support

There are others who do a good job serving on Maui's state legislative team. Among those we'd recommend are:

Senate District 7 (East Maui, Upcountry, Molokai and Lanai) -- J. Kalani English.

House District 9 (Kahului, Puunene, Old Sand Hills and Maui Lani) -- Justin Woodson.

House District 12 (Upcountry, Spreckelsville and parts of Kahului) -- Kyle Yamashita.

House District 13 (East Maui, Molokai and Lanai) -- Lynn DeCoite.
