SENATOR ENGLISH SAYS CONTINUATION OF LESS-THAN-CONTAINER-LOAD SERVICE "A BLESSING FOR MOLOKA'I AND LĀNAI"
Senator J. Kalani English (D-Hāna, East and Upcountry Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i, and Kaho‘olawe) today hailed the announcement that Young Brothers will be continuing its less—than-container-load (LCL) service at harbors statewide, including those on Moloka'i and Lāna'i. Sen. English took part in a statewide video news conference this afternoon at which the announcement was made. "Today's agreement is a response to expressions of concern from small businesses, farmers, and citizens statewide whose livelihood depends on being able to get their goods to market quickly and efficiently," Sen. English said. "Young Brothers should be commended for listening to the voice of the people on this important matter."
Young Brothers announced this afternoon that its application to discontinue LCL service was being withdrawn. Service to Moloka'i and Lāna'i will continue until at least January 1, 2012 – at which time Young Brothers would have to petition the Public Utilities Commission to discontinue the service. "An end to LCL service would have severely hurt small businesses and farms, especially in Upcountry Maui, and on Moloka'i and Lāna'i. These operations depend on their ability to transport goods without needing to create a full container load on each and every shipment." Without LCL service, Sen. English said, the cost of an average shipment would have more than doubled.
Under the terms of today's agreement, the State Department of Transportation will provide Young Brothers with additional land and improvements to harbors in Kahului, Honolulu, Hilo, and Kona. Sen. English said, "This is truly a victory for the smaller communities in our state – one that will benefit their economies for many years to come."
